The indoor exhibition included some sculptures by the same exhibitors and paintings by three invited local artists whose work we admired: Allison Neal, Araminta Page and Bronte Woodruff.
2008 Affordable Garden Art Competition
We were fortunate to have as judge of the 2008 competition the renowned Gloucestershire sculptor Rupert Till. Rupert is best known for his wonderful animal studies in wire, which are in private collections worldwide but which you are most likely to have seen at Chelsea Flower Show or at Daylesford Organic Shop and Spa near Stow-on-the-Wold. Rupert’s bronze animal studies are also popular and available in a number of galleries. His website www.ruperttill.com is well worth a visit. Rupert has worked in most sculptural media during his career and previous subjects have included abstract studies as well as his more famous representational pieces. His choice of prizewinners reflected his varied interests.
The class for larger pieces was won by Ant Beetlestone from Stroud for his limestone carving Angel. The runners-up were Anne Boning from Burford for her untitled Cotswold limestone carving and Bill Harling from Hove for his limited edition bronze resin of St. Francis.
In the class for smaller pieces costing up to £1250 the winner was Kim Pethybridge from Swindon for her Corsham stone carving Shadow Dance. Runners-up were Ray Castell from Oxford for his limited edition marble resin Preening Swan, and Sally Keene from Newent for Ribbon in ash.
Peter Davies from Wrexham won the Student Prize for his ceramic group Inter-act. Nick Sinclair from Evesham was runner-up for his metal work.
The People's Prize was not judged by Rupert but was awarded at the end of the exhibition to the piece voted their favourite by the greatest number of visitors. It was won by Caroline Barnett for her bronze resin study of a Girl with a Vase.
